1 Night in Las Vegas: Why NYNY Delivers the Best Experience

One night in Las Vegas can deliver a full Strip experience if you choose the right hotel and plan it strategically. Here’s exactly how to plan the perfect one night in Las Vegas from this base and a quieter alternative that still puts you in the heart of the action.

New York-New York Hotel & Casino: The All-In-One Option

New York-New York Hotel & Casino is one of our favorite properties on the Strip. The theme around the Manhattan skyline is so much fun with replicas of the Statue of Liberty, the Chrysler Building, and the Empire State Building visible from the street. The casino floor and the Big Apple Coaster add entertainment. The restaurants, bars, and show venues on property are outstanding. And the pool and spa are relaxing. For a one-night visit, you can check in, drop your bags, not leave until checkout, and have a full Las Vegas experience in one place.

Weekend standard rooms start at about $140 per night after taxes and resort fees, but all prices in Vegas fluctuate depending on what’s going on, so always check. The rooms are standard hotel size, and the casino floor can be noisy, which can impact your experience if you’re a light sleeper.

Pro Tip: Tom’s Watch Bar has outdoor seating right on the Strip in front of New York-New York Hotel & Casino with misting fans and shade. It’s a good spot to take in the energy of Las Vegas Boulevard before heading inside.

Vdara Hotel & Spa: The Quieter Alternative

Vdara Hotel & Spa is a non-gaming, non-smoking property in the MGM collection, set back slightly from the Strip between Bellagio Hotel & Casino and ARIA Resort & Casino. There’s no casino, which means significantly less noise and a different atmosphere entirely. The suites are super spacious. Our studio had a full dining table for six, a separate living area, a king bedroom, and a large bathroom with a soaking tub and glass shower. For a Vegas hotel room, the space was outstanding.

We booked through the Chase Sapphire Reserve travel portal using points, which came out to the equivalent of $280 per night after taxes. We did have to pay the resort fee on arrival, which is $55 but also taxed.

Vdara is an MGM Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy property, so both loyalty programs apply. The location puts you within easy walking distance of New York-New York Hotel & Casino and the rest of the central Strip.

Our Take: Stay at New York-New York Hotel & Casino if you want the themed immersive experience and don’t mind the casino energy and rollercoaster noise. Choose Vdara Hotel & Spa if you want space, quiet, and a more comfortable base. Either way, the rest of our suggested itinerary below applies.

What to Do at New York-New York Hotel & Casino

The Big Apple Coaster

The Big Apple Coaster is a crazy ride along the exterior of New York-New York Hotel & Casino, wrapping around the building’s replica Manhattan skyline. It reaches 67 mph, hits 203 feet at its peak, and includes a 180-degree heartline twist. Rides cost around $25. It’s rickety enough to notice, especially in the back cars, so it’s honestly not for me. But the front is a noticeably smoother ride and provides better views of the Strip. If you’re a coaster person, you’ll enjoy the novelty of it.

The Casino Floor and Coney Island Arcade

The casino floor carries the NYNY theme in such a fun way with subway-tile details, phone booth props, steamy streets, and the general energy of a busy casino floor. The Coney Island arcade section off the casino has classic games alongside newer ones. It’s a fun experience even if you’re not into gambling. The pool complex is available to guests during the day and is also quite lively.

Where to Eat Dinner: Gallagher’s Steakhouse at New York-New York

Gallagher’s Steakhouse at New York-New York Hotel & Casino is a classic New York steakhouse transplanted to the Strip, and it delivers. I really thought it couldn’t be as good as in New York, but I was wrong. We ordered the surf and turf, which is a pepper-crusted filet alongside a lobster tail with butter. Both were cooked perfectly and the combination was the indulgent Vegas splurge we were looking for. The dining room is dark wood and white tablecloths, the service is professional, and it was just such a perfect experience for our brief time on this trip to Vegas. (We’ve been to Vegas 2-dozen times but only had one night this time before our Southwestern road trip.)

Pro Tips: Book Gallagher’s Steakhouse in advance for weekend evenings. It fills up, and you’ll want a table before the show rather than rushing. Gallagher’s and Mad Apple are both on property at New York-New York Hotel & Casino very close to each other, so the logistics of dinner before a show are as simple as they get.

The Show: Mad Apple at New York-New York Hotel & Casino

Mad Apple is a Cirque du Soleil production, but different from every other one we’ve seen. It’s a variety show rather than a narrative storyline. You’ll see comedians, acrobats, dancers, and musicians rotate through a multi-level stage with an onstage bar at the beginning and a fun disco ball overhead. The energy is closer to a night out than a theatre performance, and we really enjoyed the energy. Tickets cost around $100 per person for good seats.

You should go in knowing what you’re getting. If you’re expecting the storytelling arc of a traditional Cirque show, this isn’t it. If you want a high-energy, well-produced Vegas night out, Mad Apple is exceptional.

Alternative Tip: If you have your heart set on a traditional Cirque du Soleil show and you’re staying at Vdara, walk the other direction to Bellagio Hotel & Casino and see “O.” The water themed show is amazing. But don’t make our mistake and book the aerial seats on level 2. You can see the show mechanics (like scuba divers) and it takes away from the magic.

Mad Apple is a fantastic show

After the Mad Apple Show: Nine Fine Irishmen at NYNY

Nine Fine Irishmen is an Irish pub inside New York-New York Hotel & Casino that was literally built in Ireland and shipped to Las Vegas, which tells you something about the level of commitment to the theme. We’ve been going here for 20+ years and it is always a good time. Live music starts at 9pm nightly. The house band plays Wednesday through Monday, with Celtic rock on Tuesdays. The bottom floor has the stage and the rowdy atmosphere. The top floor is quieter if you want to talk.

The patio overlooks Las Vegas Boulevard, which makes it a good spot for an earlier drink as well. After Mad Apple, it’s the perfect next stop. The music pulls people in from the casino floor and the energy builds as the night goes on. You can end your night here without taking a single step outside the NYNY property.

The Best Strip Walk: Bellagio Hotel & Casino to Caesars Palace Forum Shops

Let’s take a step back. If you arrive in Las Vegas early and want to wander outside of the NYNY or Vdara, wander north along the Strip to Bellagio Hotel & Casino and Caesars Palace. Budget an hour or two. The outdoor walkways between properties have bars and restaurants with misting fans and shade structures, which makes the walk bearable even in heat.

Bellagio Hotel & Casino: Fountains and Conservatory

The Bellagio Hotel & Casino fountains run on a schedule throughout the day and evening and are free to watch from the sidewalk on Las Vegas Boulevard. You can also get a nice spot on the walkway between the casinos or at one of the Bellagio’s restaurants. Look up the times before you go so you can position yourself for a show.

Inside, the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is a 14,000 square foot seasonal floral installation that changes five times a year. It’s free, open 24 hours outside of installation changeover dates, and is totally worth 15-20  minutes of your time on your Vegas Strip walk.

Caesars Palace Forum Shops

The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace are designed to look like an outdoor Roman streetscape, with a painted sky ceiling that shifts through a simulated day and night cycle. It’s super impressive, and I still love it after years of Vegas travel. The scale of the space, the architecture, and the sky effect combine into something really special.

One Night in Las Vegas: Practical Information

Getting Around

The central Strip is walkable between New York-New York Hotel & Casino, Bellagio Hotel & Casino, and Caesars Palace. The distances are longer than they look on a map, and the indoor casino routes add time (especially since they are designed to lure you in). Comfortable shoes matter more than you might expect. Don’t make my mistake of my 20s and wear heels for a long walk between casinos.

Points and Loyalty Programs

New York-New York Hotel & Casino and Vdara Hotel & Spa are both MGM Resorts and Marriott properties. Both properties also show up on the Chase Sapphire Reserve travel portal, which is how we booked Vdara Hotel & Spa at a rate that worked well for the points value. So, you should look into potentially getting these stays for free with your loyalty or points program.

When to Go

Weekend rates are significantly higher than weekday rates across all Strip properties. If you have flexibility, a Thursday night gives you most of the weekend energy at a lower price. Summer temperatures in Las Vegas hit triple digits during the day, which changes how much time you’ll want to spend outside. The Strip walk to Bellagio Hotel & Casino is most comfortable in the evening when temperatures drop, but stopping at a misted outdoor bar or cold casino floor can nicely break up a long hot walk.

One Night in Las Vegas: Frequently Asked Questions

Is one night in Las Vegas enough?

Yes, if you focus properly. Dinner, a show, and one or two late-night stops covers the core Vegas Strip experience. The Strip walk from NYNY to Bellagio Hotel & Casino and Caesars Palace Forum Shops adds another layer if you have the energy. Two nights gives you a full day to immerse, but one night done well can be a meaningful and super fun experience.

Is New York-New York Hotel & Casino worth staying at?

For a one-night themed Vegas experience, yes. The property has meaningful on-site entertainment at a lower price point than some of its neighbors. And we just love the vibe. But the casino floor and rollercoaster noise should be factored in if you’re a light sleeper. If quiet matters, Vdara Hotel & Spa nearby is more spacious and better for sleep, though also more expensive.

What is Mad Apple Las Vegas?

Mad Apple is a Cirque du Soleil variety show at New York-New York Hotel & Casino. It combines comedians, acrobats, and dancers in a high-energy format. It’s not a traditional Cirque storytelling show but we loved it. Tickets run around $100 per person for good seats, and you should book in advance for weekend shows.

Is the Big Apple Coaster worth it at New York-New York?

For coaster enthusiasts, yes. It whips around the exterior of the building at 67 mph with a 203-foot drop and is the only TOGO coaster still operating in North America. At around $25 per ride, it’s a Vegas novelty most people try once. I honestly don’t love it, but sitting in front offers a smoother ride and better views of the Vegas Strip.

What is Nine Fine Irishmen in Las Vegas?

Nine Fine Irishmen is an Irish pub inside New York-New York Hotel & Casino with live Irish music starting at 9pm nightly. The pub was built in Ireland and shipped to Las Vegas, which makes it even more fantastic. The bottom floor has the stage and the most energy. The top floor is quieter. There’s no cover charge for the restaurant and bar areas, though a charge may apply for certain events. We’ve been visiting for 20+ years and just absolutely love it.
