Is Sandy Bay Roatán Worth a Visit?
Sandy Bay is an area of Roatán Island that you may hear about in your planning, but it’s not as popular as West End or West Bay. This town is located north of West End and has a mix of residential homes, small hotels, dive resorts, and a few notable attractions. We’ve only been to Sandy Bay once, but here’s what stood out and what you should know before deciding if it’s worth adding to your Roatán itinerary.

What’s Good About Sandy Bay Roatan
It’s quieter than West End and West Bay. The vibe here is more residential with fewer crowds and less commercial development. The biggest draw is space and value. Our vacation rental was significantly larger and less expensive than anything comparable in West End or West Bay. If you’re traveling with a group or a family and want room to spread out, Sandy Bay is better than the main beach towns. There’s also a decent grocery store nearby, which makes self-catering easy and keeps costs down further.
Diving and Snorkeling Access: If you’re staying at a dive-focused property here, it can be a great base without the crowds and expense of the other locations. For divers on a budget, Sandy Bay is worth serious consideration. Blue Bahia is a great dive shop for serious divers who want quality without the tourism layer that comes with West End’s busier operations. The reef access is excellent and the experience feels more personal and less commercial.
Anthony’s Key Resort is the main attraction in the area with a range of bungalow options, activities, and vacation packages. We have not stayed here yet, but we hear it’s great for families. It’s a self-contained property with everything you need on site: accommodations, dining, activities, and the Roatán Institute for Marine Sciences, which offers a educational experience around local marine life and conservation. Families who book Anthony’s don’t need to venture out much, and that’s part of the appeal.

What to Know Before Staying in Sandy Bay Roatan
The beach was the biggest disappointment on our visit. The stretch in front of our rental was not well maintained, and we didn’t feel comfortable swimming or spending time on it. This isn’t isolated to one property. It’s a broader issue in Sandy Bay. Some stretches are fine, but the beach quality varies significantly and isn’t reliable the way West Bay’s beach is.
We were able to kayak but didn’t want to swim or hang out on the beach. Some stretches are beautiful, but others are not well-kept. Even when clean, some areas have more seagrass and aren’t easy to access for swimming.
Sandy Bay is also spread out in a way that makes it difficult without transport. West End and West Bay are both walkable. Sandy Bay is not. Our host arranged a taxi for us, which worked fine, but it added a layer of planning that the other areas don’t require. If you’re staying somewhere self-contained like Anthony’s Key, this isn’t a problem. If you’re in a vacation rental and want to explore restaurants or bars, you’ll need reliable transport.
The dining and nightlife options are limited. There’s nothing wrong with that if you’re cooking in or staying at a full-service resort, but if eating out is part of how you enjoy a vacation, Sandy Bay will feel restrictive quickly.

Who Sandy Bay Makes Sense For
Sandy Bay makes the most sense in a few specific situations:
- You’re a serious diver who wants reef access and a quality dive operation without the busy, tourism-heavy atmosphere of West End. We did some trips with Blue Bahia and really enjoyed it.
- You prefer quiet accommodations or are traveling with a big group and want a large vacation rental for a good price.
- You’re staying at Anthony’s Key Resort or another full-service property where you plan to spend most of your time. Anthony’s Key Resort has enough on site that you rarely need to leave.
Practical Tips for Visiting Sandy Bay Roatan
If you’re staying in a vacation rental in Sandy Bay, rent a car. Taxis arranged through your host work fine for airport transfers and the occasional outing, but having your own transport makes the stay significantly more flexible. The main tourist areas of West End and West Bay are both within a short drive and worth visiting for restaurants, bars, and beach days.
Bring USD from home. ATMs on the island are unreliable and Sandy Bay has even fewer options than the main tourist areas. Most local shops prefer cash for smaller purchases.
There’s a decent grocery store near Sandy Bay that makes self-catering easy, which is one of the advantages of staying in a vacation rental here over a hotel in West End or West Bay. Stock up on arrival and you’ll spend a fraction of what you’d spend eating out every meal.
Bug spray is worth packing, especially for evenings. The more secluded and green the property, the more you’ll want it.

Is Sandy Bay Roatan Worth It? Our Verdict
For most first-time visitors, no. If you want walkable beaches, restaurants, bars, and snorkeling right from shore, West Bay and West End are the right choice. Sandy Bay is worth it for a specific type of traveler: divers on a budget, families at Anthony’s Key, or groups who want space and value over convenience and nightlife. We prefer to be in the heart of the action, but we plan to check out Anthony’s Key on our next visit.
