Copa Airlines Business Class Review: Is It Worth It?

This Copa Airlines business class review covers a round trip we flew from Washington Dulles to Panama City, with the new lie-flat cabin one way and the older business class seat on the return. We’ll cover the Copa business class seat on each aircraft, the food, the service, the Copa lounge at PTY, the baggage allowance, and how we found an amazing $700 deal round trip.

Copa Airlines Business Class Review At a Glance

A decade ago we flew the same route in Copa economy for $215 each. This time a Copa business class fare surfaced at $700 round trip per person, so we booked it before the deal disappeared. If you’re weighing whether Copa Airlines business class is worth it on routes to Central America, the Caribbean, or South America, the short answer is yes for the price.

The one detail to know first

The lie-flat depends on the aircraft, and you can’t always choose which one you get. Here’s how Copa business class scored across the categories we care about, based on the round trip we flew on both the new and older cabins.

CategoryScoreThe Short Version
Seat4.5Lie-flat on the MAX 9 is a real step up. Recliner on older jets is comparable to other airlines in older domestic first class models
Food and Drink3.5A notch above United, just behind American, well ahead of Avianca.
Service4.5Friendly and attentive on both legs.
Lounge (PTY)2.9Spacious COPA Club, but the buffet is disappointing in Panama City for their hub
Value5If you can get lie-flat across the Americas for $700-$2k round trip, it’s a total steal
Overall4.2Comparable to the major US carriers, and the price usually wins

We flew IAD to Panama City on the 737 MAX 9 lie-flat outbound and the older business class cabin on the return on the 737-800 with comfortable seats that did not lie flat. We didn’t choose the aircraft, so scores reflect both products as they came.

Seat: Lie-Flat on the 737 MAX 9, Recliner on the Rest   4.5 / 5

We flew the 737 MAX 9 with Copa’s Dreams lie-flat seats on the outbound flight direct from IAD to Panama City. The cabin felt new and the design was comfortable to settle into.

Things to know before you pick a seat on Copa Airlines 737 MAX 9:

  • No direct aisle access for window seats. If you take the window and your seatmate is asleep, you’ll have to navigate around them to get out.
  • Best for couples or pairs. The layout suits two people traveling together far better than solo flyers. A solo traveler who dislikes climbing past a stranger should aim for an aisle, though be prepared for your seatmate to need to get out.
  • Fully flat and restful. On a route where most carriers still run recliner-style domestic first, a true flat bed is a real step up.

Copa Business Class Seat Specs by Aircraft

Here’s how Copa’s business class compares across its 737 fleet:

AircraftBusiness SeatsPitchReclineSeat Type
737 MAX 9 (V.1)1260 in180°Lie-flat (Dreams)
737 MAX 9 (V.2)1660 in180°Lie-flat (Dreams)
737 MAX 81638 in7 to 8 inRecliner
737-800 (V.2)1638 in7.5 inRecliner

The lie-flat is a treat when you can get it, and the older cabin still gives you a comfortable, standard regional business class seat with no sense of being shortchanged. If your itinerary mixes both, treat the lie-flat as the bonus and the older cabin as the dependable baseline.

Pro Tip: Aircraft assignments change, so check your exact plane and seat on SeatMaps.com or AeroLOPA.com before you book or pick a seat. They show the real configuration for your flight, which is the only way to know whether you’re getting the lie-flat.

Food and Drink: Better Than You’d Expect   3.5 / 5

Catering was okay. Not memorable, but a notch above United on these Central American business class routes, and American wins over Copa slightly to the region. But Copa Airlines pulls clearly ahead of Avianca, where our last business class catering included Oreos and a gross packaged turkey sandwich.

  • Copa’s meals were satisfying and well portioned, with beef and noodles on the way down and ravioli on the return.

Service: Friendly and Attentive   4.5 / 5

Service was good on both legs. The crews were attentive and quick with refills. There’s nothing standout, it was just consistent and effective, which is exactly what we wanted.

The Copa Lounge at PTY: Spacious, But Weak Buffet   2.9 / 5

The Copa Club at PTY (Panama City’s Tocumen airport) is big and comfortable, with plenty of room to spread out, grab a drink, and settle in between flights. But the buffet is a total letdown. It was a thin spread with few good options, mostly bland pasta and plain rolls. We didn’t go back for seconds, but at least the in-flight catering was good.

On the Dulles end, Copa has no lounge of its own, but as a Star Alliance carrier it opens the door to the Star Alliance lounges:

  • Turkish is our favorite of the IAD options. Service and food are always good, but it gets crowded and long lines form for the limited restrooms.
  • We’ll link our full Star Alliance lounge guide so you can plan your pre-flight stop.

Baggage, Wifi, and the Practical Details

Here are few things worth knowing before you fly Copa business class, since these are the questions we get asked most:

Copa Airlines Business Class Baggage Allowance

  • Two checked bags included, up to 70.5 lbs (32 kg) each
  • One carry-on plus one personal item, up to 22 lbs (10 kg) total
  • Priority tags for faster delivery at the carousel
  • ConnectMiles PreferMembers and Star Alliance Gold get an extra 33 lbs (15 kg) or an additional checked piece

You can confirm current limits and special-item rules on the Copa baggage information page before you pack.

Does Copa Have Wifi in Business Class?

Wifi is available on much of the fleet, though coverage and speed vary by aircraft and route. On our flights it was serviceable for messaging and light browsing rather than heavy streaming. Treat it as a bonus, not a guarantee, and download what you need before you board.

Is Copa Airlines Business Class Worth It? Overall 4.2/5

For the price, easily. Copa Airlines business class is comparable to the major US carriers flying to Central America and the Caribbean, and if you get a lie-flat seat, it’s better. You can’t beat the value. If you’re choosing between Copa and American or United on these routes, you’re splitting hairs on a fairly even product. If you’re flying farther into South America, Copa may offer a lie-flat seat for far less than major US carriers, though the long-hauls are where you’ll start seeing United, American, and Delta offer considerably more. The major carriers, however, are out of our price range for those long-haul business class routes, so we’re glad Copa Airlines offers a cheaper business class alternative.

How to Find Copa Business Class Deals

Here’s the part we most want you to take with you, because this is where the luxe-for-less approach comes into play. Our $700 Copa Airlines business class round trip wasn’t a fluke. We just booked another Copa Airlines business class itinerary for around $850 each: IAD to Panama City with a three-night free stopover, on to Curacao, home from Aruba. (We’ll add a Divi Divi Air hop between the islands). So, that’s two Caribbean islands plus a Panama City stopover in business class for under $900 each round trip.

Here’s how to make these Copa business class deals possible:

  • Book directly through Copa to add the free stopover. Copa lets you build in stopover days at no added fare cost, which is how we turned one trip into three destinations. You can start on the Copa flights page.
  • Be patient and watch for deals. These fares come and go. The $215 economy fare a decade ago and the $700 business fare this year, and our next $850 island vacation were all purchased through Copa Airlines sales.
  • Use a fare alert service. We get alerts from Daily Drop Pro for Copa’s frequent business class drops. The annual charge is $100, but the savings on a single trip more than covers it.

Pro Tip: When you spot a fare you like, book it before you overthink it. Copa’s business class deals to the region don’t last and you can always add stopover days during the same direct booking. The good deals were disappearing literally as we were booking for our next trip.

Copa Airlines Business Class: Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, on the Boeing 737 MAX 9, which has Copa’s Dreams lie-flat seats with 180-degree recline and 60 inches of pitch. The 737 MAX 8 and 737-800 use a recliner-style business seat instead. You can’t always choose your aircraft, and Copa can swap equipment, so check your specific flight on SeatMaps.com or AeroLOPA.com if the lie-flat bed matters to you.

How Much Is Copa Airlines Business Class?

Fares vary widely. We booked IAD to Panama City round trip for $700 per person, and a later multi-island itinerary for about $850 each. Watching for deals and using a fare alert service is how we keep it this low. Standard fares run higher, so patience pays off.

What Is the Copa Airlines Baggage Allowance in Business Class?

Two checked bags up to 70.5 lbs (32 kg) each, plus a carry-on and a personal item. PreferMembers and Star Alliance Gold members get extra allowance. Confirm current rules on Copa’s baggage page before you travel.

Is the Copa Stopover Free?

Yes. When you book direct on Copa’s website, you can add a stopover of up to several nights in Panama City at no extra fare cost. It’s the easiest way to turn one trip into two or three destinations.

Is Copa Business Class Better Than American or United?

It’s close. On these regional routes Copa is comparable to both, slightly ahead on a good day, with food a notch above United and just behind American. The lie-flat on the MAX 9 is the real edge if you can get it. For most travelers the fare is the deciding factor, and Copa often wins there.
