Is Lufthansa Premium Economy Worth It on the A380? Our Honest Review

Lufthansa Premium Economy on the A380 is a different experience than what you get on American or United, and not just because of the aircraft. We flew a nonstop Lufthansa A380 long‑haul route from the US and came away with a clear verdict on whether premium economy is worth the upgrade – plus one real complaint about the seats. In this review, we break down the seat comfort, food, amenities, lounge options, and how the price compares to United on similar routes between the US and Germany.

🥂 Lufthansa Lounge Options

Lufthansa Premium Economy doesn’t include lounge access, so you’ll need to plan ahead. Fortunately at Washington Dulles, there are quite a few worthy options.

The Capital One Venture X lounge is our favorite if it’s not too crowded. The food spread is pretty impressive with small plates, a full bar, and comfortable spaces to settle in and relax before a transatlantic flight. If you have a Venture X card, this is the best option with one caveat: It’s right after security, so you’ll need to build in time to get to your gate.

Delicious small plates at the Capital One Lounge at Dulles

The Lufthansa lounge is more efficient than exceptional, but it’s right by the gate and Priority Pass gets you in without any issue. We stopped in both and enjoyed our experience.

Points Tip: Priority Pass works for the Lufthansa lounge at IAD, and the Capital One Venture X lounge access is complimentary with the card. If you’re flying out of Dulles without business class lounge access, these two cover you well. You can even check out one of our favorites. Your priority Pass will get you into the Turkish Airlines lounge, too, which is not too far away from Lufthansa.

Note: The Lufthansa lounge closed for renovations in 2026 and has always had strict time restrictions for Priority Pass anyway, so Turkish may be your best bet. If you want free Taittinger champagne, try the Air France/KLM lounge.

Munich: The airport does have two priority pass lounges, but we used our Star Alliance status to check out the Lufthansa offerings, which were quite nice. We also enjoyed a beer at a service station right in front of our gate before our onward flight to Helsinki. So, even if you don’t have practical lounge options, the airport is actually pleasant.

🛬 Why the Airbus A380 Changes the Experience

We were really excited to fly the enormous double-decker Airbus A380 for the first time, which Lufthansa operates on the IAD-MUC route. Even in premium economy – which is the first cabin on the main deck, with business and first on the upper deck – the size of this plane makes a noticeable difference. The cabin feels both quieter and more spacious than a 777 or 787. The sheer scale of the aircraft means there’s something peaceful about it, even in a full cabin.

Premium economy occupies its own dedicated section at the front of the main deck. The configuration is 2-4-2, with rows 50 through 57. We were in 53H and 53K, a window pair on the right side. This is our favorite way to fly when we can’t find a business-class deal because there’s no middle seat and no strangers sharing our row. The section is curtained off from economy, and the lavatories sit at the back of the cabin just ahead of the galley, which means no economy traffic is coming through to use the restroom or check out the galley. On a long-haul transatlantic flight, that quiet space matters a lot.

💺 Lufthansa Premium Economy Seat Review

The seats are spacious with a 38-inch pitch and 19.3 inch width, which is a meaningful step up from economy. The recline goes to 130 degrees (about 7–8 inches), so it’s not lie-flat but enough to sleep in a reasonable position on a night flight. We did wish they reclined a little farther. Each seat has USB and AC power, audio and video on demand, and WiFi.

The seats look very nice and have a good pillow, blanket, and head rest. The problem is the cushioning. By the end of the flight, the firmness had caused me some real back discomfort – enough to take away from an otherwise good experience. This isn’t a dealbreaker for everyone, but if you have back issues, factor it in, and do some additional research. It could just be me! Comparably, American and United’s premium economy seats have felt softer and more forgiving on similar (and even longer) routes.

✅ Best Seats on the Lufthansa A380

  • Rows 50 and 51 are the front two rows (with a window-pair of seats on both sides). They have no seats next to them across the aisle because of the stairs in the middle that go up to the business and first-class cabin.
  • If you want a more private setup without another row across the aisle from you, these are worth looking into. Just note that these areas may see more traffic because they are located at the front of the plane.
  • Also, the front middle aisle seats, Seats 52 D and G, are great for taller passengers due to their position at the side of the stairs with no seat in front.

Here you can see seat 52G on the left with unlimited leg room and the front side seats to the right that are somewhat private due to the stairs but also very close to the front and jump seats

Budget Warning: Lufthansa charges for seat selection in premium economy, so you’ll have to factor that in if you want to secure your favorite seat in advance. United flies the same IAD-MUC route and historically didn’t charge for PE seat selection, but will now start doing so for basic fares.

🪥 Lufthansa Premium Economy Amenities: What’s Included

Each seat had a blanket and pillow waiting on arrival, plus a Porsche Design amenity kit. The kit is the standard Lufthansa premium economy offering: L’Occitane lip balm, a cooling gel cream, compression socks, a bamboo toothbrush, toothpaste, and mints. We didn’t have an eye mask on the departure flight (to my horror!) but we did on the way home.

Overall, it was nothing flashy, but the Porsche Design bag is a nice touch and the items were useful during and after the flight. There were also water bottles at each seat.

There was a pre-departure juice offered in premium economy but no bubbly or anything fancy. We’ll still take the small gesture to feel more premium.

🍽️ Is Lufthansa Premium Economy Food Better?

Yes. We were provided an elevated premium economy menu, which was a nice touch, too. The food was served with a pretzel roll and real flatware, and a Bavarian coleslaw starter. The main course options were grilled Nuremberg-style sausages with Bavarian cabbage and mashed potatoes, or a mushroom ragout with pretzel dumpling. We split one of each.

The vegetarian option was the winner for me, as well as the dessert, which was a Bavarian cream with raspberry coulis.

The snack service later offered a chicken breast with vegetable salad and remoulade, but we had plenty of food with the main meal.

The meal wasn’t as great as some business class experiences we’ve had, but it was noticeably better than American’s and United’s premium economy food service on comparable routes, as well as a clear step up from economy. For those reasons it gets 4.5 stars.

🔔 Lufthansa Premium Economy Service: What to Expect

Meal service started promptly on each leg, and we were able to enjoy some wine, as well as water refills. We have nothing to complain about. The service was efficient and professional, but it ran a little cooler than we’re used to on American and United. No big deal, but if in-flight rapport matters to you, it’s worth knowing.

The grilled sausage was also good

💰 What Does Lufthansa Premium Economy Cost?

We paid $1,750 per person round trip, which included our connecting leg from Munich to Helsinki and back from Riga and our advance seat selection. For that route, the price felt fair, though more expensive than our United premium economy flights to Paris, London, and Amsterdam.

Up until very recently, United (which flies the same nonstop IAD-MUC route with premium economy) didn’t charge for seat selection and offered travel credits that were easier to use in practice. Unfortunately, United just launched a “basic” premium economy fare that does not include free seat selection, changes, and other perks that used to be available for all fare levels in premium cabins. Still, if United’s pricing is competitive and you have status or existing credits, it’s worth pricing out both before committing.

They gave us anniversary chocolates and bubbly on our connection

⚖️ Is Lufthansa Premium Economy Worth It?

On the A380, yes, but with one caveat. The aircraft itself is a genuine selling point. The cabin is quieter, the bathroom situation is better than many other long-haul premium economy we’ve flown, and the food and presentation are a major step above American and United on this route. If you’re flying to Munich or connecting through on a longer trip, Lufthansa premium economy is a great choice.

The caveat is the seat cushioning. If you have back sensitivity, it’s worth reading recent reviews to see whether other experiences compare to mine. The seat was too stiff for me to get comfortable. We’d fly it again, but we’d bring a lumbar pillow and hope the newer version has softer padding.

It’s worth it if you’re routing through Munich, you find a competitive fare, and you prioritize the overall cabin experience over the seat itself. It’s worth reconsidering if United is similarly priced on the same route and seat comfort is your top priority.

The Lufthansa A380 premium economy cabin is large but surprisingly quite and elevated
