We Took a Luxury Trip to Asia for $3k Each Using This Points Strategy
We just got back from a whirlwind Asia trip that couldβve easily cost $15k or more. Between business class flights, lovely hotels, a few private tours, and restaurant splurges, this couldβve been a once-in-a-lifetime blowout. But we made it happen for just $6k total ($3k each) by planning smart, optimizing points and miles, and selectively splurging where it mattered. The $6k includes absolutely everything from flights and stays to food and entertainment.
We’re breaking down every cost, every point strategy, and all the secrets to finding luxe-for-less – including the coveted Qatar QSuite for just $38 in taxes. If youβve ever wanted to fly business class, stay in premium hotels, and eat your way across Asia without spending your life savings, this post is for you.

The Itinerary at a Glance
We spent 12 days moving quickly but meaningfully through:
- Doha, Qatar
- Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
- Malacca, Malaysia
- Singapore
- Bangkok, Thailand
- Abu Dhabi, UAE
Each stop included meaningful sightseeing, local food tastings, a lovely hotel (well, except Ibis), and lounge access. It was far from slow travel, but it was also a satisfying mix of luxury, local eats, and bucket-list experiences.

Step 1: How We Flew for a Fraction of the Cost
Flights: $4,200 Total Out of Pocket for Two People
This includes taxes and the annual-fee cost-allocation for two American Airlines credit cards (because the sign-up bonuses covered some of our flights). This was the biggest cost of the trip, but we packed in serious value, including American premium economy, Thai and Etihad business class, and the coveted Qatar Qsuite with a double bed in the sky.
Getting to Asia
- We flew round-trip premium economy from Philadelphia to Doha on American Airlines for $3,600 total.
- We live in DC, but adding DCA to PHL on the same itinerary wouldβve bumped this to $5,500, so we booked a $0 Amtrak ticket with points and took the train to Philly instead. From
- the train station to PHL, you can pay $28 for two roundtrip SEPTA tickets or $80 round trip for rideshare.
- Economy seats wouldβve cost less but been too cramped, and business class cost a fortune in points or money. Flying premium economy on a 13-hour flight was 100% worth it and hit the value sweet spot for us.

Intra-Asia Flights: Business Class on Points
Hereβs where the real value comes in by booking partner airlines with American Airlines points. And if you think accumulating this many points is unrealistic, will explain everything at the end about how we easily racked up so many.
- Doha β Kuala Lumpur (Qatar Airways Business): 80k AA miles + $76 in taxes and $198 in annual card fees for two one-way tickets.
- Singapore β Bangkok (Thai Airways Business): 40k Aeroplan miles + $150 taxes for two one-way tickets.
- Bangkok β Doha with a stopover in Abu Dhabi (Etihad Airways Business): 80k AA miles + $76 in taxes for two one-way tickets.

Step 2: How We Booked Free Hotel Nights
Hotels total: $0 out of pocket
We booked every hotel with points, either from Hilton, Hyatt, Chase, or Capital One (AmEx also works great for Hilton). Note: Your specific strategy will depend on your own loyalty programs and points strategy, but we find that the Hyatt transfer from Chase Ultimate Rewards is the best value.
Here’s how we did it:
- Hilton Doha (Qatar): 40k Hilton points for one night (and we got a free diamond upgrade to a gorgeous suite).
- Hyatt Centric Kuala Lumpur City Centre (Malaysia): 10k points for 2 nights via Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer. We’re still amazed by how beautiful and centrally located this property is for only 5k Chase points per night transferred to Hyatt.
- The Majestic Malacca, an SLH Hotel (Malaysia): 50k Hilton points for two nights.
- Ibis Budget Clarke Quay (Singapore): 13k Capital One points. Note: This stay was not eligible for ALL Accor transfer points, so we “erased” the charge with Capital One points.
- Hyatt Place Bangkok Sukhumvit 24 (Thailand): 10k Hyatt points for two nights.
- Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi: Hyatt free night certificate.

Simplifier Option: If you only have Chase points, you could adjust this itinerary to all Hyatt stays with: 1 night Doha, 3 nights KL, 1 night Singapore, 3 nights Bangkok, 1 night Abu Dhabi all with a Chase Sapphire sign-up bonus of 70k-80k points.
We couldβve gone bougie in Singapore with the Andaz for 25k Hyatt points (and we almost did) but opted to stay budget for just this one leg at Ibis Budget Clarke Quay. We wouldn’t stay more than one night, particularly because of the “shoilet” (that’s what Theo calls a bathroom with no separation between the shower and the toilet.) But it was super central, perfect for a one-night stay, and let us save our Hyatt points for the next trip.

Bonus: The Hilton Doha had an executive lounge, (accessed with our Diamond status) which gave us light meals, free drinks, and a place to chill. We also had included breakfast and a $200 resort credit, which added even more value and brought our total spend there to $0.

Step 3: Planning Food Tours, Local Eats and a Few Splurges
Of course, we could have saved a ton by building DIY tours in each location, but we wanted to add the luxury of a few private guides, especially with such a fast-paced trip. It was really important to add some meaningful experiences in each location. We also love to have some high-end dining experiences. So thatβs what we prioritized.
Doha
- Hotel lounge and meals: Free. Our Hilton diamond status includes free breakfast, as well as happy hour in the executive lounge. Alcohol was expensive at the resort, so this was a big savings. You can also curate a simple meal from the happy hour selection. But we used our $200 Hilton resort credit to check out Trader Vic’s for dinner on arrival and lunch on our one full day before a sightseeing tour. (This card’s $550 annual fee was already recouped on another trip.)
- Private city tour: $140. We had a fantastic guide for a 4-hour Doha city tour that included a boat ride at night to take in the sparkling skyline. We also got to explore Souq Waquif, learn the history of Qatar, and hit some scenic spots. We highly recommend this experience.
- Dinner and a refreshing shower in Qatar lounge at DOH before flying out: Also free. The lounge scene at Doha’s Hamad International is unreal and we spent some time exploring four of them. We’ll give you all the deets in an upcoming post. For now, we’ll say: Arrive hungry and take advantage of all the included food and beverage options.
- Tips and transport: $50. (Pro tip: You can save big taking Uber all over town.)

Kuala Lumpur
- Rooftop dinner and drinks at the Hyatt Centric: $100. We had so much fun meeting the bar manager, Matin, and now consider him our friend in KL! We enjoyed chatting about travel and highly recommend the espresso martini, margarita pizza, and prawn quesadilla. Delicious, elevated bar food with a swanky vibe and skyline view.
- Breakfast was not included at the hotel but we had leftovers from the night before on our first morning, some $6 ramen for lunch, and Hyatt breakfast for $34 for both of us on the last morning (it was a beautiful layout with plenty of options).
- Private food tour: $120 to sample the local dishes and learn about the city on a walking tour.
- DayTrip private driver to Malacca with stop at Batu Caves: $150. (Next time we would just take the bus and save $100).
- Tips, transport, misc: $50. Pro tip: You can save big and get to the city fastest taking the KLIA Ekspres train from that airport. This was $15 one-way for two tickets.

Malacca
- Private food tour for dinner on arrival: $125.
- Breakfast: A lovely cooked-to-order breakfast was included with our stay and was served late enough for us to skip lunch both days.
- Spa Village massages at the Majestic Hotel: $200 (two 80-minute massages. We know you can get this much cheaper elsewhere, but this was the luxe-for-less option right at our Small Luxury Hotels property. This would be $600 at a US property).
- Our full day in Malacca was rainy but we did have a tranquil walk around town after breakfast for free and enjoyed the fitness center and spa at the hotel. There’s also a cute little pool if the weather is good.
- Upscale Malay-Portuguese fusion dinner at the Mansion (also at the hotel): $125.
- Bus to Singapore: $40. Pro tip: A bus cost way less than a shuttle or private driver and a lot of times is more comfortable. We had a very nice ride from Malacca to Singapore with incredible savings. It did take nearly 8 hours (it was supposed to be 4) but that was due to an accident blocking all lanes. We were more concerned about the people in the accident than the added time to our journey.
- Snacks and lunch in transit: $20.

Singapore
- Dinner at Lau Pa Sat hawker center: $32 total for two large beers and two meals. We only had one night in Singapore and our bus delay put us behind schedule, but we did have a perfect experience for the short time we were there.
- Gardens by the Bay outdoor gardens and Supertree Grove: Free. We did this at night to see it light up. So cool!
- Drinks at Clarke Quay: $50. On our way back to the hotel we stopped to check out the entertainment at Clarke Quay, which is super expensive but a lot of fun. Fortunately for our budget, we were too tired to stay long.
- Spago tasting lunch (at the top of Marina Bay Sands!): Free. I erased this $200 lunch with Capital One points to keep us on budget (the charge was categorized as travel, since it was a hotel restaurant). Pro tip: You’re only required to spend about $25 USD (30 SGD) per person to dine here. So if you want the experience, without the big bill, you can make it happen. It’s cheaper than the observation deck, though the view is a little more hidden. The hotel staff is understandably very strict about the “guest only” rule at the famous infinity pool.
- Gardens by the Bay Cloud Forrest and Flower Dome: $70.
- Exploring the Jewel at Changi Airport and dinner at the Silverkris Lounge: Free.
- Transportation, tips and misc: $100.

Bangkok
- We got into Bangkok very late and went straight to bed.
- Since we’ve been to Bangkok many times, we spent our full day enjoying the hotel amenities and wandering around town. It’s easy to get around by Grab, tuk tuk, or metro, and there are plenty of affordable food options in every part of town.
- If you’re staying at the Hyatt Place Sukhumvit 24, we highly recommend checking out Sukhumvit Soi 38 for the amazing night market food, which is located at BTS Thong Lo (Exit 4).
- Bangkok is also known for its rooftop pools and bars, and the Hyatt Place has a great one, Aire bar.
- Total spend on food, drinks, transport, and misc: $300.

Abu Dhabi
- After some stressful travel and serious exhaustion, we just luxuriated here in our beautiful room with a stunning view. We had a gorgeous room service feast for $140.
- Transportation and misc: $50.

Final Cost Breakdown for 2 People
| Category | Total Cost |
| Flights (cash + taxes + annual fees) | $4,200 ($11k without miles) |
| Hotels | $0 ($1700 without miles) |
| Tours, food & splurges | $1,900 ($2300 without points and perks) |
| TOTAL | $6,100 ($15k without points, miles, and perks) |
While most of the cost is airfare, those business class tickets came with many meals, lounges, and rest areas that also saved us on food and other splurges, so the true savings is even more.
The Secret Sauce: How We Leveraged Points and Miles
This trip was a great example of stacking credit card perks and timing bonuses for maximum value β but we always do it responsibly, and with a plan. Here’s how it broke down:
βοΈ American Airlines Cards
We both opened a Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select card, which right now is offering an 80k sign-up bonus when you meet the spending requirement. That bonus covered our business class flights from Doha to Kuala Lumpur on Qatar Airways and from Bangkok back to Doha on Etihad in business class. The annual fees and taxes are factored into our total cost.
Note: I upgraded to the Citi AAdvantage Globe, which has a $350 annual fee but some exciting perks if you’re a frequent AA flier.
π Qatar QSuite Review: Is it Actually Worth the Hype?
βοΈ Thai Airways via Air Canada Aeroplan
This year, Capital One announced that authorized users on the Venture X would lose free lounge access. So, Theo signed up for his own Venture X and scored a 75k bonus after spending $4,000 in three months. We transferred 40k points to Air Canada Aeroplan to book a Thai Airways business class flight for two from Singapore to Bangkok – that’s pretty much the cost of a budget flight. Another massive win on points. We used the remaining points to erase the Ibis stay and Spago lunch, because both were categorized as “travel.” We did not allocate the annual fee of this card to this trip because we used the annual credits to cover it on another stay.
π Thai Airways Business Class Review: A Mixed Bag on a Short Haul

π¨ Hilton
Our Hilton points stash came from past business stays and a quick accumulation on our AmEx Aspire card, but to be honest, we’re no longer excited about Hilton loyalty. Hilton has devalued its points twice in 2025 alone, and customer service tends to be dismal compared to Hyatt, even with Diamond status.
That said, 90k Hilton points went a long way on this trip. Plus, you can transfer from AmEx Membership Rewards, if you have that card, at a 1:2 ratio (or an even better rate during transfer bonus promos), making it just 36-40k AmEx points for the same stays. 90k Hilton points covered our nights in Doha and Malacca. We did book before the devaluation, but you can still find reasonable deals to these locations.
π Hilton Doha Review: 6 Things We Loved (and 1 We Didnβt)

π¨ Hyatt
We transferred 20k Chase Ultimate Rewards points total for four nights:
- two nights at the new Hyatt Centric in downtown KL; and
- two nights at the Hyatt Place in Bangkok.
That redemption value was unreal. We’ve shifted most of our hotel loyalty to Hyatt this year for better redemptions, customer service, and elite perks.

π¨ Ibis Budget Singapore (Accor)
This property wasn’t eligible for All Accor Live Limitless points. We paid cash for our one-night stay at Ibis Budget Clarke Quay and then erased the charge using 13k Capital One points. We don’t love using our points for a 1 cent value, but we tried (successfully) to keep our hotel stay at $0 for this trip.
While we wanted to stay at all bougie properties, mixing in a low-cost spot here, as well as the bus to Singapore, kept us on budget.

A Few Words on Points Strategy
We donβt chase every card. But when the sign-up bonus is strong and fits our travel goals, it makes sense. We shifted our points and miles strategy this year to focus on American Airlines, Hyatt hotels, and Capital One lounge access. So, getting multiple SUBs was the right option for us.
A few guidelines we live by:
- Always pay your cards off in full every month.
- Only open cards if you can meet the minimum spend easily, as manufactured spending diminishes the value.
- Understand the annual fees and what you get in return (credits, lounge access, etc.).
- Strategize with referral bonuses and transfer partners to make your points go farther. For example, I referred Theo to the Capital One Venture X and got a 25k bonus.
- Book well in advance or last minute: American Airlines only had two business-class awards fares available on each Qatar flight, so we really benefited from booking 10 months in advance. Same with Hilton, booking early got us maximum benefit before their points were devalued. On the flipside, deals opened up a few days before we had to pivot to Etihad in light of the storm.
We donβt consider ourselves credit card churners, but we like to try out a variety of cards to see if the benefits are worth it in the long run after the sign-up bonus is spent. This trip was made possible by smart card management and timing. And it was fun to see the rewards in action!
π 2026 Travel Credit Card Strategy: What Iβm Dropping and Keeping

Bonus Savings
We had lounge access at every airport, which came with meals, snacks, water, showers, and nice places to relax. We also got served meals on all our flights (some outstanding, some not so much) and were given amenity kits with essentials to keep comfortable. So, with all the food at the airports, on the planes, and with our private tours, we didnβt need to buy anything extra beyond the experiences we included in this itinerary.

Our Favorite Moments
- Walking into our Qatar Airways Qsuite and realizing this trip was really happening.
- Watching the Doha skyline glow at night from our boat tour.
- Making new friends around the world.
- Seeing Theo fall in love with Malacca the way I did over a decade ago.
- Eating a cheap dinner at hawker stall in Singapore, then wine-pairing at Spago with views from Marina Bay Sands the next day.
- Unexpected stopping in Abu Dhabi and having the most gorgeous view right from our (free) room.

The Bottom Line
We spent about $6,000 total and felt like we had the experience of a trip three times that cost. Business class flights, beautiful hotels (with one budget spot thrown in), private tours, and unforgettable meals were all made possible by smart use of credit card points and a bit of planning.
Ok, so we may be totally insane to take a 12-day trip across the world with 3 nights in the air and 9 nights on the ground β but with all the adventures and bougie experiences, it was totally worth it.
We actually wound up getting one more hotel – INSIDE the Doha airport – which we covered with my Capital One points. But that’s a story for another post.
