Best Charleston Sunset Cruise: Our Honest Review

A Charleston sunset cruise was the best two hours we spent in the city, and we would book it again in a heartbeat. We sailed on a catamaran with a champagne toast, some charcuterie, and a perfect orange sky over the water. That last part might be just luck, but the rest was due to our fantastic crew and beautiful boat. We’ll tell you everything you need to know, plus how to book.

The Sunset Sail on Serendipity

We booked the public sunset sail with Charleston Sailing Charters, aboard their catamaran Serendipity. The boat holds 18, but they cap the public sunset sail at 12, so there was room to move around and find a quiet spot on the deck. Captain Dustin and his crew ran everything smoothly, and everyone aboard was easy to be around, which is important when you’re sharing a boat for two hours.

The cruise lasts about two hours and leaves from Seabreeze Marina downtown, right by the Ravenel Bridge. Start time shifts through the year to line up with sunset, so you are on the water at the best time. We had lovely weather and just enough clouds for a full orange sunset over the harbor. That part is luck, but it made the evening perfect.

Weather Note: The captain decides on weather at departure, not off the extended forecast, and the company cancels under 1% of sails. If yours is called off, you get a reschedule or a full refund. We’d trust the captain’s read on the weather and book even if the week looks iffy. There were massive storms the day before our sunset cruise, but our night was perfect.

How Much Is a Charleston Sunset Cruise?

The public sunset sail on Serendipity costs $150 per person on Viator and $125 booking direct with Charleston Sailing Charters. We recommend booking direct if you can and putting the difference toward drinks or dinner. The price was totally worth it for a two-hour catamaran sail with a champagne toast and charcuterie included. If you want the boat to yourselves, they also run private charters from two to four hours.

Is the Charleston Sunset Cruise BYOB?

Yes. The sail includes a champagne toast and charcuterie, and coolers with ice and soft drinks are on board. Beyond that, you can bring your own. Bottles of beer are not allowed (cans only) but you can bring a wine bottle. Grab your drinks at the Island Cabana Bar right at the marina before you board. It is a casual dock spot with a tackle shop, an order counter for food, snacks, merch, and a big drink selection. We picked up canned wine there for the sunset cruise and sat out on the dock with dinner beforehand. The marina looks like nothing much as you pull up, but the Cabana Bar turned the wait into a great part of the evening.

What You See on the Charleston Harbor Sunset Sail

The route runs past Charleston Waterfront Park, out toward Fort Sumter, and along the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge. Captain Dustin looked for dolphins for us as we sailed along, viewing the bridge from the water and the skyline at golden hour.

This is not a narrated history tour, and we were glad it was not. The crew shared Charleston history and local details as we talked, so we learned about Fort Sumter and the harbor without sitting through a script. For a sunset sail, that relaxed version suited us far more than a guide on a microphone would have.

Who Should Book This Charleston Sunset Cruise

Best for: Couples, friends, and anyone who wants a calm, pretty evening on the water. The 12-guest cap keeps the public sail intimate rather than crowded, and the BYOB setup keeps it affordable.

A big party crowd looking to get loud may want to explore their private booking options. This public sunset sail was calm and scenic, which probably depends on the particular passengers. Charleston Sailing Charters does run private catamaran charters for bachelorette parties and other celebrations, so book one of those if a party is the plan.

Is a Charleston Sunset Cruise Worth It?

For us, this was the best one to book. If you only fit a single excursion into a Charleston trip, we would make it this sail. You get two hours on a comfortable catamaran, a champagne toast, charcuterie, a beautiful sunset over the harbor, and the freedom to bring your own drinks, all for around $125 booking direct. We got a full orange sky, which is never guaranteed, but even the boat and the crew alone would have made it worth the evening.

Hyatt House Charleston/Historic District is central and an easy base for getting around downtown on foot. It isn’t a special-occasion hotel, but with prices being so high in downtown Charleston it gives you an affordable, walkable option. It’s even better on a Hyatt free-night reward.

Comfortable

The Vendue is Charleston’s art hotel, and the rotating artwork gives it more character than a standard boutique. It’s near the waterfront and the historic district, within walking distance of most of the hotspots. Just beware that it’s totally haunted, which adds to the Charleston charm.

Luxury

Wentworth Mansion is a Gilded Age mansion turned into a five-star hotel, with 21 rooms, personal service, and a wine-and-appetizer hour. It’s a little removed from the busiest streets, which is part of the appeal for a splurge.
