If you’re like us right now, you’re dreaming of sunshine, ocean breezes, and a break from the winter blues. If you want an amazing winter escape without spending a fortune, we’ve got you covered. These eight destinations are warm, welcoming, and surprisingly affordable. They’re all easy to reach from the US and Canada, and they each offer something special.
Whether you’re after city culture, beach relaxation, or a jungle adventure, you’ll find something on this list that’s right for your warm winter getaway. These are our top eight winter escapes.
1. Dominican Republic
Punta Cana is one of the easiest winter escapes, with tons of nonstop flights and reliable warm weather. If you skip the resort model (see our post below on how), you’ll find much better value, more local flavor, and way more freedom to do what you want to do. There are plenty of boutique hotels, Airbnb-style rentals, and fun beach bars. You just have to know where to look.

And if you really want to stretch your budget, head beyond Punta Cana. The north coast around Puerto Plata, the Samaná Peninsula, and even Barahona on the southwest coast all offer lower prices and more authentic experiences. Just check the forecast if you’re heading north, as the wind can make beach days less relaxing in certain seasons.

2. Roatán, Honduras
Roatán is our happy place. We’ve been coming here for years, and it still tops our list. The reef is just off the shore, the snorkeling is some of the best we’ve ever done, and the vibe is relaxed but still exciting. There’s a strong expat and dive community, and you’ll find everything from beach bars with live music to fine dining with sunset views.
It’s easy to get around and unwind, and it’s still one of the best-value islands in the Caribbean. West End is more casual and affordable, while West Bay is more polished but truly beachy and walkable. Come here if you want a chill beach trip with genuine character.

3. Puerto Rico
San Juan is one of the easiest warm-weather escapes if you’re coming from the mainland US. You don’t need a passport or new currency, and flight deals are plentiful. In just a few hours, you’ll arrive in a city full of character with an outstanding food scene, beautiful beaches, and vibrant nightlife. San Juan is easy to navigate on foot and by taxi or ride-share, so skip the rental car if you’re staying here (traffic is insane).
If your budget is tighter, you’ll find plenty of smaller towns and beaches worth exploring. You’ll want to rent a car for this, as private drivers are very expensive. You can explore the waterfalls, surf beaches, and roadside lechón. We stayed in Ponce on our last visit, which is less polished than San Juan, but has real charm and value. Next time we want to try Rincón.

4. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
If you want energy, music, and iconic beach views, check out Rio, and Copacabana specifically. The flight’s longer and more expensive, but once you arrive, your dollar goes far. The beach culture is big and casual and the people watching is top tier. Everyone’s out on the beach whether young, old, in families, or traveling solo.
We have a full post on how to do Copacabana luxe for less. There’s no better base than the Hotel Emiliano – a stylish Small Luxury Hotels property right in the heart of Copacabana Beach and just a short stroll to Ipanema. We spent five nights here and loved every minute. Here’s why we loved it and how we saved nearly $300 a night on our room:

5. Santiago, Chile
This one’s for city travelers who want more than a beach. Santiago gives you parks, mountain views, sidewalk cafes, and a great home base for day trips. It’s clean, fun, and easy to get around. It’s also summer here while we’re deep in winter back home. Flights to Chile can be long, but you’ll probably find that the best flight deals deep into South America are to Santiago, especially if you book early.
Spend a day or two in the city, then head to wine country. The Maipo and Casablanca Valleys are close, and tastings are surprisingly affordable. From there, hop over to Valparaíso. It’s gritty and colorful, full of murals, staircases, and local flavor.

6. Guatemala
Guatemala is packed with variety: colonial towns, lakes, jungle ruins, and dramatic volcanoes. It’s also one of the most budget-friendly destinations on this list.
Antigua is the best base with cobblestone streets, rooftop cafés, and a strong community of travelers and locals. From there, take a shuttle to Lake Atitlán. Each village around the lake has its own vibe, from quiet yoga spots to artsy local scenes, to party towns. If you’re into Mayan history, head north to Tikal. The scale and setting are unforgettable, and the trip there is part of the adventure.

7. Belize
Belize is not the cheapest option, but it’s one of the easiest if you want a polished experience. English is the official language, the infrastructure is good, and you can plan a perfect mix of beach and jungle.
Start with a few days on Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye for reef snorkeling, sailing, and sun. Then head inland to San Ignacio. You’ll find caves, waterfalls, ruins, and eco-lodges that blend a little luxe with nature. We also love Placencia and Hopkins if you want some great beach options on the mainland. Belize is the best spot for travelers who want an easy warm-weather escape with a touch of adventure and don’t mind spending a bit more.

8. Saint Maarten
This honestly isn’t our favorite island. But we keep coming back because it’s fun, affordable, and easy to get to. Flights are usually reasonable, rental cars are cheap, and you can stay on either the Dutch or French side depending on your style and budget.
We loved Pinel Island for a mellow beach daytrip. Maho Beach is also worth a stop for the close-up plane landings. Even if you don’t want to stand under the jet blast, it’s wild to watch the planes land over the beach. We stopped at Sunset Bar and Grill for a drink before our flight home and got an outstanding view of the action.
