Affordable Luxury: 10 Proven Ways to Upgrade Your Travels

Who says affordable travel can’t be glamorous? We’ve spent years testing, researching, and perfecting the art of “luxe for less.” With a little planning and some strategic splurging, you can get a five-star feel while keeping things affordable. These 10 practical tips show you how to upgrade your trip, stretch your budget further, and enjoy a taste of the good life (without the hefty bill).

1. Rooftop Vibes Without the Room Rate

Book the budget-friendly stay, then head to a nearby luxury hotel for dinner or rooftop drinks. You still get the skyline vibe, the ambiance, and the stunning backdrop without the nightly rate.

We do this all the time. In New York, we stayed at a Hampton Inn near Times Square, then made our way to M Social’s rooftop for cocktails and dinner with a perfect photo op. In Santiago, Chile, we stayed at the DoubleTree on points and splurged for rooftop drinks at the W Santiago with gorgeous views of the Andes.

2. Maximize Free Night Awards

If your hotel loyalty program or credit card comes with a free night, don’t waste it on a low-tier booking. While Hyatt caps free nights at category 4 properties, Hilton lets you use them at any property with standard award availability. That’s huge! Use it to cap off a trip at a high-end resort or boutique property. We’ve used ours for a final-night upgrade at the Waldorf Astoria in DC and a luxe beachfront resort in San Juan after a budget-friendly week elsewhere in Puerto Rico. One night in a bougie place makes the whole trip feel elevated.

Sometimes you can find an amazing Hyatt Category 4 property for your free night, like this Grand Hyatt in Abu Dhabi with a stunning view.

3. Get Creative with Points

Some big hotel groups give you a free night when you book a certain number of nights on points, and you can do this even if you don’t have a big stash of points accumulated. For example, with Hilton, if you book four nights with points, you get the fifth night free. Combine that with occasional 100% bonus points sales, and you’ve got a serious deal, especially if you’re eyeing a high-end redemption.

We did this in Rio with Hotel Emiliano, a Small Luxury Hotel right on Copacabana Beach. The cash price was out of range for us, but using points bought during a promo gave us nearly 50% off. But a word of caution: Be sure to run the math first for your specific trip. It doesn’t always work out to savings, but when it does, it can be a significant bargain.

4. Hit the Bar, Not the Prix Fixe

Want the ambiance of a legendary restaurant without the bill for a full tasting menu? Grab a seat at the bar. Many upscale spots serve a casual menu at the bar where you can sample a few small plates, have a drink, and get the ambiance without committing to a full dining experience. Just be sure to know the rules for the particular spot you want to visit. Some require reservations for the bar, some allow walk-ins, and the menu options vary.

The gorgeous Le Train Bleu in Paris at Gare de Lyon is the perfect place to grab a seat in the bar area, soak up the opulent interiors, sip a cocktail, and have a light bite. You can experience old-world luxury for a fraction of the cost.

Formal dining at Le Train Bleu is phenomenal but the bar is a great alternative

5. Go Luxe for Lunch

In addition to scoping out bar seats for dinner, the lunch prix fixe is a great way to experience a Michelin-star menu at a much lower price. The mid-day menus are often smaller, more affordable, and still deliver an elevated experience. Bonus: you’ll still have daylight for views and better photo ops. We did this in Monaco at the Hotel de Paris, right across the street from the famous Monte-Carlo Casino.

6. Time It Right: Shoulder Season Wins

Traveling just before or after peak season gives you a double win: lower prices and fewer crowds. In places like Dubrovnik, Sicily, or even London, we’ve scored deals in shoulder season that would’ve cost triple during high season. And the weather was still great (or sometimes way better than summer).

7. Book Private or Small Group Day Tours

A multi-day private or group tour is usually more expensive than it’s worth for us, but we can build in private experiences here and there to add depth to our trip while also being affordable overall. It’s worth it for deeper cultural access and flexibility to balance out with cheaper days just wandering around. Look for Airbnb Experiences, boutique food tours, or museum guides who offer behind-the-scenes entry. It feels exclusive without being overpriced. We love WithLocals and also filter Viator searches by private activities. Some of the listings are super pricey, but we’re always able to find something great within our budget.

8. Stack Perks for Better Value

Use credit cards (responsibly), loyalty programs, and booking platforms to stack perks like room upgrades, free breakfast, late checkout, and dining credits. Our Hilton Aspire AmEx comes with a hefty $550 annual fee, but the free night at the Washington Waldorf Astoria alone was a $1225 value (which we would never book outright). Add in other bougie perks like CLEAR to skip the airport security line, food and beverage credits, room upgrades, and airline credits, and you’re starting to feel the “luxe for less” working for you. Luxury travel credit cards like the AmEx Platinum and Chase Sapphire Reserve come with annual credits at high-end hotels and other great perks that add to your experience.

9. Max Out Your Lounge Access

If you have a premium travel card or status that grants lounge access, be sure to use it. Airport lounges can turn a long layover into a calm experience with free food, drinks, Wi-Fi, and showers. We get access to many lounges with our Capital One Venture X and it makes a huge difference in how refreshed you feel. Although luxury travel credit cards can come with hefty annual fees, we love this one because the $395 fee is easily recouped with the annual $300 travel portal credit and 10k bonus points. There are no complicated credits to track.

10. Premium Economy is Worth the Bump

For longer flights, we’ll pay more to bump up from basic economy to premium. We’re not talking about extra leg-room seats in economy, a true long-haul premium economy is more like domestic first class. The added legroom, better meals (sometimes), and early boarding make a noticeable difference. We have a few ways to find premium economy seats on SAS or French Bee for half price, which you can read about here:

Choose one over-the-top thing to spend on. Whether it’s a hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia, a spa treatment in Istanbul, or a chef’s table dinner in Lima, pick one thing and go all in. You’ll remember it forever, and your budget won’t take a hit if you’ve balanced the rest.
